yeah, blah, blah.

these reports aren't that new.

few things:
- people are only testing for this because there are technological ways to fight infertility: no one systematically measured sperm count before IVF
- birthrates have stabilized in many Western countries
- the reason for male infertility is assumed to be certain chemicals. By avoiding them, the problem will resolve
- human extinction? seriously?
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.
- Douglas Adams

I'm going through IVF with my partner.
1) Had to reduce alcohol
2) Had to swap to boxer underwear,
3) Had to give up cigarettes

........all simultaneously, four months ago.

There was a remarkable improvement.

You and Amanda swapped underwear with each other?

Huh. I had no idea that could get someone pregnant.

OK. I'll ask some of my ex partners at the accounting firm, but I prefer to have sex with Amanda.

Should I wear a suit to that partner's "work in progress" meeting?

There is a fallacy here. Lower sperm count does not equate to reduced male fertility. If so, we would see minimal reproduction in India and other hot countries, because the one single most important factor reducing sperm count is making the little beggars too hot !

Well Mat, I can accept the cigarettes, they are really bad (personal experience); I've heard about the boxer underwear, although I don't wear them; but reducing alcohol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crikey Mat, what would a bloke do for fun :D

Honestly, I would probably accept the idea of chemical intake, but do we have causation, or even association??

I've got 5 kids, all grown up, and the first three whilst I drank quite solidly, smoked and wore jocks. My last two boys, I still drank solidly (never changed), still wore jocks, but had stopped smoking. So if you can make any sense of all that, then all power to you.

After WWII, reproductive rates in the Soviet Union soared, just as they did elsewhere, in spite of the fact the sperm count of some 20,000,000 men dropped to zero.

Reduced sperm counts may mean it is less likely that a man will be a daddy, but it does not appear to correlate that the woman is less likely to be a mommy.

Well who can say Lance, but there is only one that doesn't look my twin so to speak.

Just made the comment because we are all different and so respond differently to things. Go back to the '40's & '50's and men certainly drank quite a lot, and a majority of them smoked. Yet they traditionally sired large families.

Whilst I don't deny that the above factors could affect fertility, they are certainly not the be all and end all. I believe that one of the greatest suspects is chemicals getting into the food chain and perhaps even into the atmosphere. It is a very different world to that of 70 years ago. And today's male seems to be a lot more sedentary in his lifestyle, another factor that could be a guilty party.
