Dear Pyrrho, of Fair Play and exploding heads

Heated discussions on a hot topic.

Dear Pyrrho, of Fair Play and exploding heads

Post #1  Postby citizenschallenge » Fri Jan 18, 2013 9:16 pm

Dear Pyrrho your silence has been deafening, but it has been inspirational.

Allow me to share.

Recently someone that's been "debating" with me at the "SkepticForum"  who has been a reliable contributor of insults and echo-chamber cut'n pastes and misdirections ~
well this character decided that instead of trying to counter all the evidence of continued global warming,
{ That is explanations and links to resources with information and scientific arguments }  with logical discussion - this "skeptic" decided an animation of an exploding head was the appropriate response.

Now, that a couple days {and counting} have past, it seems the moderators of said forum feel that sort of outrage is fine'n dandy.  Obscenity is strictly verboten, show some boobs and you're history... but reply to a serious conversation with an animation of an exploding head... and it's considered within SkepticForum's perception of fair play.  Well, perhaps skepticism for the sake of skepticism is their guiding principle, silly me, how could I have ever expected more from that crowd.

I admit to still being a bit upset, though my experience at that site has given me an appreciation for the unjustifiable ruthlessness of the attacks respectable, professional scientists have, and continue to have, to endure at the hands of little more than politically motivated thugs.

As it happens I came across one of Tim Lambert's posts today and it reminded me of the long running series he's written about the orchestrated Attack On Science in The Australian.  An attack with the intent of shutting down learning and forever freezing any proactive initiative to slow down our injection of global warming causing gases into our thin atmosphere.

So as part of my "healing process"  I decided to compile an index of Tim Lambert's articles examining the strategic attack on science as it is carried out in the pages of
The Australian newspaper.

Tim Lambert {http://scienceblogs.com/deltoid/} thank you for all the work you have done to try and shine some light on this travesty.

Might give you some time to think about why loving our modern life style means we need to ignore all the damage it is doing to our biosphere and future?

Has the sharing started yet ? Till then.

Tim Lambert made one very unusual contribution. Guess what it was, cc ?
First comment
You seriously can’t figure this one out?
It’s MBH99 + the instrumental record. The simultaneous positive and negative at the end is because there are actually two graphs there.

Tim solved the riddle of what Gore was using (as if to show how Lonnie Thompson's ice cores verify Michael Mann's hockey stick). He was using Michael Mann's hockey stick to verify Michael Mann's hockey stick.

A case of wood for the trees.Tim immediately recognized the shape.

I think your post may be argumentative and disruptive.
The topic at hand includes cc's claims about responses to his teachings. His own responses are therefore reasonably taken as instructive, instructional, illustrative, remarkable.

Yea, what exactly is the topic at hand?  It appears to be CC bitching 'cause the forum admin won't take sides in a debate (if you can call what CC does debating).

You start, Kennyc.  Discuss the topic at hand so we can follow your lead.

Been chewing on this, since I'll admit I was curious if you'd weigh-in and what you'd have to say.

At first I was surprised, but than it dawned on me that having unplugged myself from TV, got bored with and set aside video/computer games (before PacMan came around) and withdrawn to the edges of civilization and spent more time doing physical work outside than internet shopping or hanging out at malls and movies and crowded stadiums and other big city haunts - Thus I've been removed from the relentless onslaught of blood and gore that's become part and parcel of modern society - and I missed out on the De-Sensitivity Training and it seems I've evolved into a slightly different species after these decades.

Also having an empathic nature watching a human head get blown up is about as ugly as it gets
and putting it out there is about aggression and veiled threats and basically the act of a sick psyche that's got nothing of actual substance to offer.

And, maybe I'm a touch more sensitive because I'm German-American and have spent my life with that iconic question: "How could those nice, intelligent, liberal German people allow their nation to turn so demonic?"  As a kid I never ever imagined I would get to watch the process unfold first hand.  But, a look at the evolution of our political landscape speaks for itself and the mystery becomes clearer every season.

Sensitive soul

Post #29  Postby SweetPea » Sun Jan 20, 2013 5:36 pm

.                                                    Image

I don't understand why such a sensitive soul condoned the below print by his main people.  Never answered if he was part of it.

you just want to let loose and scream about how you want to take those {!#%@} arseholes, those closed-minded bigotted genocidal pieces of regurgitated dog {!#%@} and do unspeakable violence to their bodies and souls

Work out what you are best suited too and do that. But be able to distance yourself...my personal contribution will be to ripe Anthony Watts’ throat out – metaphorically of course.

It seems hateful and obscene compared to showing a gif from Scanners, used to illustrate that an adverse announcement by a hero must cause intense internal pressure.

Explain how planning an attack strategy to violence body and soul of intellectual opponents is so easily condoned but commenting on an opponents internal struggle is the end of the world? What would they mean  by violence to a soul ? Going after his family - "metaphorically"?

condone that ?

It does look like Gore Fever can drive normal people to an extreme of rage - or was it kooks.all the way down to begin with?

OK, I admit I'm not schooled in the finer arts of logic - but it seems to me we got a logical fallacy here.

Or to put it another way, it seems like a non-sequitor
your above comment on the one hand and
the act of injecting that graphic into that particular type of discussion, virtual though it might be.  But hey, that's just me.  Like I admitted, I've lived a sheltered life.  We live and learn.

*Oh and a little full disclosure - We do have a TV - though it is off line, DVD only.  My gal does like movies so past couple years I've seen more than I want, but hey, the sacrifices of love... and fortunately she don't like horror either.   ;)   Me I'm the documentary {and past few years internet lectures} type... go figure

Rob, it's not about pretending we can account for every penny like on a building project   ;)
Or about the ability to endlessly play rhetorical tricks.

It's about figuring out what's happening upon our planet along with understanding it's driving cause,
yes us.  Society's incredible output of greenhouse gases and the undeniable geophysical dynamics at work here.
How do folks manage to miss the seriousness of all this?

Rob, Who's kidding whom, every attempt (Kyoto and the rest) is summarily shot down.
Nothing can happen until everyone figures out the seriousness of the problem.

Yea I know and pigs fly...

Still this stuff isn't a joke - it's heading right into our future

Global Warming Has Increased Monthly Heat Records Worldwide by a Factor of Five, Study Finds
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/20 ... 101732.htm

Jan. 14, 2013 — Monthly temperature extremes have become much more frequent, as measurements from around the world indicate. On average, there are now five times as many record-breaking hot months worldwide than could be expected without long-term global warming, shows a study now published in Climatic Change. In parts of Europe, Africa and southern Asia the number of monthly records has increased even by a factor of ten. 80 percent of observed monthly records would not have occurred without human influence on climate, concludes the authors-team of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Complutense University of Madrid.

{...}

Natural variability does not explain the overall development of record events

If global warming continues, the study projects that the number of new monthly records will be 12 times as high in 30 years as it would be without climate change. "Now this doesn't mean there will be 12 times more hot summers in Europe than today -- it actually is worse," Coumou points out. For the new records set in the 2040s will not just be hot by today's standards. "To count as new records, they actually have to beat heat records set in the 2020s and 2030s, which will already be hotter than anything we have experienced to date," explains Coumou. "And this is just the global average -- in some continental regions, the increase in new records will be even greater."

{...}

Dim Coumou, Alexander Robinson, Stefan Rahmstorf. Global increase in record-breaking monthly-mean temperatures. Climatic Change, 2013; DOI: 10.1007/s10584-012-0668-1

Please don't take refuge in their use of "if", that's just PC.  It's like if the sun comes up tomorrow since I don't actually know yet that the sun will be there in the morning.  I don't think it's a logical fallacy to be sure that increasing GHG injections make it a certainty... the various stages of our reckoning may be off by a decade here or there - { but that seems little justification for the hubristic contempt displayed throughout this board. }

And I'm sorry my style irritates some of you, but it ain't like your own various attitudes encourage the best in a person.  Still guess one of my points is that someone's gotta talk about Earth Appreciation and pushing the need to learn about our Global Heat Distribution Engine.

Yea I know and pigs fly...
Still this stuff isn't a joke - it's heading right into our future

Everything hinges on the answer to that question.
Until you answer the question, you won't be taken seriously.
Walking around the question isn't answering.

But nobody asked you to account for any pennies. What else will you pretend?
Or about the ability to endlessly play rhetorical tricks.

You don't learn that if you are using ad hom it can fairly be reflected back at you.
You don't accept that If you are calling people names and constantly disparaging character, then your character is fairly called into question.
You don't accept that If you want to make claims then you need to back them up, for people to take you seriously.
You don't accept that if you refuse to answer very important questions about your claims, you are seen in an unfavourable light.

This is a skeptic community, unlike the fake "skeptical" site you love - where you and your friends and your ideas are protected from criticism.

I also notice Rob still hasn't tried explaining ~ Why loving our modern life style means we should ignore the damage it is doing to our global life support system?

If he said that he supports that statement, then one might then expect that he should defend it. However, I doubt he said that. It's really just another of your fabrications, isn't it ?

Yo Rob,
I've run out of time to search for that post where you so eloquent sang the praises of today's wonderful level of progress {well for that lucky fraction who get to live it}.  It began with the suggestion that 'no one alive today would want to live 50 years ago' and so on.  Do you recall it, it is a few weeks old.

But that is not saying "if we love modern lifestyle then we should ignore the damage"
You fabricated ? - again ?
