Anyone seen this gas chamber door?

Postby Aaron Richards » Fri Mar 02, 2018 8:33 pm

Just came across this peculiar find:

http://auschwitz.org/en/museum/historical-collection

Image

Has anyone else seen this before? I don't remember seeing this particular door photographed in Pressac's Technique and Operation, but I've seen others:

The door Robert Jan Van pelt talks about was the one from Pressac's technique (closeup and better lighting) and looks nothing like the first pic (has a hemispherical metal grid):

Tbh I don't like how most of these images on the site are photographed with a lighting that makes them look like stock photos rather than historical artifacts. It would have also helped had they provided a description and more context.

"...we had the duty towards our Volk (the German people) to kill this Volk (the Jewish people) that wanted to kill us." - Himmler in his 1943 Posen speech reminding any future holocaust denier how absurd their beliefs really are.

Not an expert by any means but that looks more like a door to a delousing chamber than an actual gas chamber. D-H would probably know.

Your door is fairly similar to this one in BW 5a.

No, the suspected gas chamber door from Pressac was lost from memory. I know of no place where it can be found, was likely sold by a red army soldier or was just stolen.

MR JUSTICE GRAY: Where has the physical door gone?

R. J. van Pelt: The physical door?

Q. The door of which one is looking at the photograph?

A. I do not know. I have asked people.

Q. It has disappeared?

A. Yes.

Perhaps its in Theresistadt with the Mauthausen GC door[s].

Maybe those missing Jews from Chelmno, the ARC and Auschwitz took it with them on their way to Unicornville.

Turns out that Aaron's door is just the lesser known side of a well known door.

Photo 26 [PMO neg. no. 12683]

An almost intact gas-tight door found in the ruis of the western part of Krematorium V and presented by the man in short sleeves from Photo 24 (with the shaved neck). This door has no peephole even though it was used for homicidal gassings. It is at present conserved in Krematorium I of the Stammlager, in the stoking pit of the third furnace.

Corresponding patch-ups to both sides suggests it had a peep-hole once. Why would the nazis remove a peep-hole from a homicidal gas chamber door?

That would definitely be a good find if it was. It operates really similar to Olère's drawing of the corpse removal from the gas chamber. Not that this means much.

You think it's possible this is actually just patch work to make the door more air-tight?

The second door we have no answer for.
