Alleged Magda Goebbels Quotation

Postby Xcalibur » Mon Feb 27, 2017 8:06 pm

"We have demanded monstrous things from the German people, treated other nations with pitiless cruelty. For this the victors will exact their full revenge...we can't let them think we are cowards. Everybody else has the right to live. We haven't got this right---we have forfeited it. I make myself responsible. I belonged. I believed in Hitler and for long enough in Joseph Goebbels...Suppose I remain alive, I should immediately be arrested and interrogated about Joseph. If I tell the truth I must reveal what sort of man he was--must describe all that happened behind the scenes. Then any respectable person would turn from me in disgust. It would be equally impossible to do the opposite--that is to defend what he has done, to justify him to his enemies, to speak up for him out of true conviction...That would go against my conscience. So you see, Ello, it would be quite impossible for me to go on living. We will take the children with us, they are too good, too lovely for the world which lies ahead. In the days to come Joseph will be regarded as one of the greatest criminals that Germany has ever produced. His children would hear that said daily, people would torment them, despise and humiliate them. They would have to bear the burden of his sins and vengeance would be wreaked on them... It has all happened before. You know how I told you at the time quite frankly what the Führer said in the Café Anast in Munich when he saw the little Jewish boy, you remember? That he would like to squash him flat like a bug on the wall...I couldn't believe it and thought it was just provocative talk. But he really did it later. It was all so unspeakably gruesome..." [

Never seen this before. Doesn't ring authentic to my ears.

Meissner, Hans-Otto (1980). Magda Goebbels: The First Lady of the Third Reich. New York: The Dial Press

Meissner got the quote from Ello Quandt, Frau Goebbels' sister-in-law from her first marriage. Quandt dated the quote as from March 1945.

I can believe that she came to loathe Joey G. For a lot of reasons. I cannot believe she came to despise the Führer.

(Longerich's biography of Goebbels has no hint of this.)
"World peace is certainly an ideal worth striving for; in Hitler's opinion it will be realizable only when one power, the racially best one, has attained complete and uncontested supremacy. That can then provide a sort of world police, seeing to it at the same time that the most valuable race is guaranteed the necessary living space. And if no other way is open to them, the lower races will have to restrict themselves accordingly."

I found a letter to her son, he was in POW camp:

Letter from Magda Goebbels to Harald Quandt
28 de abril de 1945.

April 28, 1945
written on the fuhrer's bunker
My dear son:

it has been six days since we arrived here, at the Fuhrer's bunker, papa, your six brothers and I, to put the only possible and honorable end to our nacionalsocialist life. I do not know if you will ever receive this letter. perhaps there will be one human soul that will allow me to send you my last goodbye: I want you to know I am besides yoru papa agaisnt his will, and this past sunday the fuhrer still wanted to help me get out of here. You know your mother, we carry the same blood, I did not had to think it a minute, our magnificent idea[ls] are falling down, and with them, all I ever knew about beauty, admirable, noble and good.

The world that will come afther the fuhrer and nationalsocialism does not deserves that one wants to live on it. because of that, I have brought the children with me, the life that comes ahead is not worth for them to live it, and a grateful god will understand that I myself set them free. You wil live and I ask only one thing form you, that you never ever forget you are a german, never do against [your] honor, and thru your life, see that our deaths won't be in vain.

The children are marvelous, in our circumstances, as primitive as they are, they take care of themselves, if they have to sleep on the floor, if they can clean themselves, if they can eat at all, and what they can eat, if, never a word of complaint or crying . the explosions shake the bunker , The elders protect the young and their presence is a blessing, even if only because they bring a smile now and then to the fuhrer.

Last night, the fuhrer took off his golden party pin and pinned it to me. I am proud and Happy. May god bring me strenght to complete the last and hardest [task]. We have only one objective: be loyal to the Fuhrer to death and be able to end our lives with him is a grace of destiny which we never counted with.

Harald, my dear boy, I wil tell you the best thing I have learnt in life: be loyal [truthful]:loyal to yourself, loyal to men, and loyal to your fatherland.

[(new page, over)]

it is difficult to start a new page, who knows if I can fill it, I would like to give you so much love and strength, and take away all the pain for our loss. be proud of us and try to remember us with pride and happiness, We all have to die..isn't more beautiful to live les, but with honor and valiant than to have a long live in shameful conditions?

I must finish, Hanna Reitsch is taking this letter, she is leaving again, I embrace you with my most sweet, deep and maternal love.

This is what I found inWilliam Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, chapter: Goetterdaemmerung: The Last Days, page 1133:
Magda Goeebels to Hanna Reitsch:

My dear Hannah.....when the end comes you must help me if I become weak about the children. They belong to the Third Reich and to the Fuehrer and if these two cease to exist there can be no further place for them. My greatest fear is that the last moment I will be too weak.

page 1128, Goebbels Appendix to the Fuehrer's Political Testament:

For the first time in my life I must categorically refuse to obey an order of the Fuehrer. My wife and children join me in this refusal (Hitler ordered him and Borman to escape).....For this reason, together with my wife and on behalf of my children who are too young to speak for themselves......to end a life that for me personally will have no further value....

I see references to the quote you gave:

Jewish Virtual Library:

Earlier, Magda had confided to her trusted friend, her sister-in-law, Ello Quandt, "In the days to come Joseph will be regarded as one of the greatest criminals Germany has ever produced. The children will hear that daily, people would torment them, despise and humiliate them. We will take them with us, they are too good, too lovely for the world which lies ahead".

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/women-of-the-third-reich

Wikipedia:

Magda appears to have contemplated and talked about killing her children a month in advance.[50] According to her friend and sister-in-law (from first marriage) Ello Quandt, she told her that they were all going to take poison.

"We have demanded monstrous things from the German people, treated other nations with pitiless cruelty. For this the victors will exact their full revenge...we can't let them think we are cowards. Everybody else has the right to live. We haven't got this right---we have forfeited it. I make myself responsible. I belonged. I put in the other stuff so you could see the mindset. I'm inclined to believe the quotation is real, it shows up in a lot of different places. I do find it odd that Shirer didn't mention it but I guess this was not his primary concern.

Danke, Jeff.

What I find curious (as StatMech noted above) here is it isn't mentioned in any of the Goebbels bios I've read to date (although it's perfectly clear why Irving would've omitted it).

It is curious. I'm inclined to believe it's real, it's possible that a biography of Goebbels wouldn't focus on something Magda said/wrote.

Thanks for all that enlightenment. I had heard the story on many documentaries, and it plays a prominent role in the movie "Der Untergang." What I hadn't realized before was that Magda's real fear was what the post-war world would say about her husband, and that was why she murdered her children. The movie in particular made it appear that she was so fanatically devoted to the Third Reich and Hitler that she didn't think life would be worth living without them.
"A general conversion among the boys was once effected by the late excellent Mr. Fletcher: one poor boy only excepted, who unfortunately resisted the influence of the Holy Spirit, for which he was severely flogged; which did not fail of the desired effect, and impressed proper notions of religion on his mind."

I am also skeptical about this letter.
There are only two sources given:
the first is this book:
https://www.amazon.com/Magda-Goebbels-A ... 075153448X

And the other is just the "Quandt testimony"...

Have not read the book, but i can figure out why the powerful Quandt family would have liked to sweeten the personality of Magda. As i am pretty sure that Klabunde own source would refer to this testimony as her source. In fine very little which might explain why it has been disregarded by Historians.

My question would be why would she write to her former sister in law what she did not to her own son.

I might read the book as a "beach book" as it seems Magda was raised by a Jewish Stepfather and had a love affair with a Zionist leader...strange lady, indeed.

Hermann Göring had also Jewish Godfather Hermann Epenstein who allegedly had an affair with Hermann G's mother.
Albert Göring was rumored to be Epensteins son.
Nothing strange, affairs do happen between women and men.
