I'm thankful that this is a clip from the excellent Bob Newhart show. When I saw the title I had a twinge that it was going to be some hideous things said by Bob Newhart in an interview. An odd reaction I know, but after Bill Cosby maybe I'm a little too much on edge.

Speaking of television shows, why are current television producers unable to make comedy shows with the quality of Newhart?

Also, get off my lawn.

The truth transmitted via a comedy show - very clever. Perhaps now you spectiks will accept the facts.

Newhart's timing is incredible.

I once listened to an interview with the executive producer of Frazier, who discussed that exact issue. He suggested it boiled down to submitting the show to networks to obtain production funding. As that involved a committee, it required everyone on that committee to be able to "imagine" jokes on a submitted paper script as they would appear on screen, which is difficult enough. However, members of the network committee include marketing, ad-sales and financial people with no imagination, and thus it is almost impossible to get new ideas up.

For Frazier, the producer said he was simply lucky to have had a track record with "Cheers" to get to a pilot.

I work in television in production accounting & finance and talent management. I worked for Beyond Ltd, a production company that specialises in documentaries and science shows. (They made Mythbusters). In the late 80's the bosses made attempts to move into "drama", which is more profitable. Their first attempt was probably the worst television show ever made by mankind called "Chances", simply because it takes a unique and rare talent to make these sort of shows. (Australia is weak concerning screenplay writers)

I had that same "Oh, no." sinking feeling when I read the title. Whew!

I misread the title and thought it was a book review written by Bob Newhart about an awful book.

I remember watching that episode, way back when, and thinking how good it was that skepticism had come far enough for an audience to laugh at a crazy person like that. Now, society seems to have descended to the point where crazy people like that are making the TV shows. Ancient Aliens? Ghost Hunters? Good grief, Charlie Brown....

Sorry about the thread title. I was having trouble coming up with a suitable thread title.
