Liar! Liar! Pantson Fire!!!

Postby tenthie » Tue Dec 22, 2009 5:32 pm

Richard is a strange liar. He lies on six days but always says the truth on the 7th day...
His statements on 3 consecutive days are as follows...

Day 1: " I lie on Monday and Tuesday."

Day2: " Today is Thursday, Saturday or Sunday."

Day3: " I lie on Wednesday and Friday."

Q1. On which day does he say the truth?
Q2. Which day is Day 3?

Day 1 and Day 3 can't both be lies, since he only tells the truth one day per week. Therefore, either Day 1 or Day 3 must be true.

Day 2 must be false, then.

The day when he tells the truth must be either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday.

Day 2 cannot be on Thursday, Saturday or Sunday.

On the one hand:

If his statement on Day 1 were true, then Day 1 would have to be either Wednesday or Friday (because Day 3 is false).

But then Day 2 could only be either Thursday or Saturday, which would make the Day 2 statement true! That means Day 1 can't be true!

Therefore, the statement on Day 1 cannot be true.

On the other hand:

If his statement on Day 3 were true, then Day 3 would have to be either Monday or Tuesday.

Then, Day 2 could only be false if Day 3 had been Tuesday, which would make Day 2 a Monday.

Day 1 would then fall on Sunday, and be false.

Therefore, Day 1 falls on Sunday and is false; Day 2 falls on Monday and is false; and Day 3 falls on Tuesday, and is true (which makes the statement on Day 1 false).

He started his career at a non-profit organization. His parents didn't like the work he did, though, because it was their family restaurant.
