"Biomorphs" in Upper Atmosphere

Post by Bart Stewart » Fri Sep 20, 2013 2:27 pm

Wanted to pass along this article that suggests microbial life is drifting in from space on a continual basis, and has been doing so all along. Sounds impossible, but the tartigrade is a microscopic creature capable of surviving environmental extremes similar to outer space. It enters suspended animation.

The original article is in the Journal of Cosmology.

This story has collapsed within 24 hours of appearing! The first big red flag was the name of one of the participants of the study - N. Chandra Wickramasinghe. For years he collaborated with one Fred Hoyle to promote the idea that single cell alien life rains down from the skies; the notion has been shot down at every turn.

Secondly, it appears the balloon's sterile medium was not "teeming" with biomorphs, but held only one! Apparently it resembles a diatom. This aquatic microbial creature would be unsuitable for the extremes of outer space. If any alien microbes existed they should look very different from the diatoms of Earth.

Three, the Journal of Cosmology has a record of rushing forward with stories like this, which has pummeled its credibility. So, that's enough to kill the idea in my book, and maybe items one and two above, or just item one, would have been enough.
