General intro-please read

Postby Skepchick » Fri May 27, 2005 1:17 am

These threads consist of questions that went unanswered during the panel discussions at the Brain Mind and Consciousness Conference at CalTech
http://www.skeptic.com/conf/conference.html

With Dr. Shermer's permission and at suggestion of a friend those question cards have been retrieved and now transcribed.

It was decided the best format is to allow one thread per question. Questions are transcribed exactly as written, but in cases they were signed, names were omitted for privacy reasons. In the event the question was addressed to someone specifically, I included the name of the speaker in the subject line. Questions are being transcribed in a random order. If you do not see your question here, it has probably been misplaced, and feel free to start your own thread. If I could not read the handwriting, I did not transcribe the question. Every attempt has been made to be exact in replication of the question, any errors are accidental.

This is a work in progress. I will be adding questions in chunks of a dozen or so based on my availability.

Looking forward to reading it once corrected. Thanks.

Van, this is a synopsis to the conference of '05. While Shermer's lecture may have been similiar, heck, even verbatim for all I know, I think the OP was referring to the Q&A from the recent one. Perhaps I am mistaken. Either way, thanks for your time and the link to the '05 one. :D

The original link was to the 2005 conference.

Here it is on the Wayback Machine

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

On edit: I just now noticed the date of the OP. I'm such a tard. Sorry! :(

Funny to read that original post from 2005, I don't think I had ever seen it before today.

Scholarpedia has a decent list of topics on the models of consciousness.
