I think you need to set out more compelling reason than that. And by compelling I mean set out the evidence for why you think life after death is possible and why the evidence applies to it.

Hmmm. As Cadmusteeth points out, cmg, it would be a good idea to set down your reasoning. What leads you NOT to think eternal oblivion a possibility?

It depends on your stand point, from which point do you ask the question? Are you asking from the point of consciousness or the puny body image - small mind perspective?

Dictionary definition of eternal:
eternal
ɪˈtəːn(ə)l,iːˈtəːn(ə)l/Submit
adjective
1.
lasting or existing forever; without end.
"the secret of eternal youth"

Dictionary definition of oblivion:
noun
1.
the state of being completely forgotten or unknown:
a former movie star now in oblivion

So based on your question, being eternally forgotten, I'd say, yes, if you believe that time will extend infinitely. Once we die and all the people who know us die, memories of us will be lost also, so by definition, we will be eternally forgotten.

Taking another definition of oblivion:
oblivion
əˈblɪvɪən/Submit
noun
1.
the state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening around one.
"they drank themselves into oblivion"
synonyms: unconsciousness, insensibility, stupor, stupefaction, senselessness, blankness, darkness; More

Basically not being aware or conscious. So in that sense, eternal oblivion or eternally unconscious seems likely once you reach the end of your life.

Imagine the time before you were born. If you really want to know what that's like, I can help you. It's really easy.

What's the tense for past obliviousness? Does the tense matter?

Meh. That's just obliviation. I'm talking about before that.

What's the correct tense for oblivious before you even can be aware that there's such a concept?

And, unfortunately, there's no giant tit in the sky when you die.

But that could be a religion if we all want to start one for tax exemption reasons. ;)

We could go with that. I've seriously looked into it.

To establish a religion for tax exempt porpoises, we need 1000 adherents, a book of edicts, and a physical building for the porpoises of weekly meetings (not everyone has to come all the time).

I suggest this is very probably just another sock puppet of Matt MSV7 and just another variant on his annoying spam "I don't want to have a bad near death experience" (NDE).

"Eternal Oblivion" / Wikipedia
In philosophy, eternal oblivion (also referred to as non-existence or nothingness) is the permanent cessation of one's consciousness upon death. This concept is often associated with religious skepticism and atheism

We make boutique items out of useless threads. This one's going to be a Grateful Dead lampshade when we're done.

What are the facts? Again and again and again-what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what “the stars foretell,” avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable “verdict of history”--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your single clue. Get the facts!

Yes.

I'd say it's a very high probability approaching certainty.

In fact, I'm not a betting man, but I'm willing to bet my entire life savings my kids will make better use of my assets than giving them to some interdimensional being.

If I meet god or whatever, I'll just come back and re-write my will. I'll make sure to book an appointment with the lawyer beforehand.

The question is meaningless.

Oblivion implies a state of nothingness or non-existence - I say implies because no attempt was made to clarify the opening statement, so I'm going to take likelihood over post-hoc definitions that appear when disagreement over responses occur. (Which they won't since even though I've been at this forum for very little time I'm spotting one-(s)hit-wonders).

Nothingness is not associable with eternity. Regardless of whether this or any other universe is eternal, oblivion is a state of not-being, which doesn't take any time. It's like saying how long is a piece of no string.

Right, I'm off to toss off some manatees. Someone warn the zoo.
