A Man Without a Country

Postby Tom Palven » Tue Apr 17, 2018 8:33 pm

Kurt Vonnegut was born and raised in Indiana, fought in Germany during WW II, and later became A Man Without a Country.

This was his last book, published in 2005, and he died two years later at the age of 84.

Here are a couple of quotes:

p. 79 "Do you know what a humanist is? My parents and grandparents were humanists, what used to be called Free Thinkers. So, as a humanist I am honoring my ancestors, which the Bible says is a good thing to do. We humanists try to behave as decently, as fairly, and as honorably as we can without any expectation of rewards or punishments in an afterlife."

p.71 "Many years ago I was so innocent I still considered it possible that we could become the humane and reasonable America that many members of my generation dreamed of....But I know now that there is not a chance in hell of America becoming humane and reasonable."

p. 87 "Before we attacked Iraq, the majestic New York Times guaranteed that there were weapons of mass destruction there"

p.86 "...we now present ourselves to the rest of the world as proud, grinning, jut-jawed war-lovers with appallingly powerful weaponry --who stand unopposed."

While I agree with everything he said about foreign policy and have great respect for him, I can't claim him as an individualist because he totally buys into socialism and government solutions to poverty and so on, as do most of you contributors here.
If one can be taught to believe absurdities, one can commit atrocities. --Voltaire

Love Kurt.

p. 87: we do stand opposed....its why we are losing.

Socialism and government solutions are the very ocean that economic programs swim in: whatever you think they are or should be.

Silly to think otherwise.
