Copyright infringement. Users may post very brief excerpts of content from other websites, with a link to the online source. This should be no more than a short paragraph, accompanied by commentary.

I am interested in your suggestions and recommendations to make this rule restrictive enough to protect the forum's legal backside while permitting sufficient Fair Use of content belonging to someone else.

This does include the posting of images.

What say you?

Regarding quoting, I'll be satisfied with whatever you decide. The current loose guideline* is acceptable to me. If you want to limit quoting to 1/5 or 1/6 the content of a linked-to article, that's fine with me too.

Regarding images, I'm not sure what to do.

* I say "loose" guideline, because I couldn't find anything about quoting articles in the FAQ. The quoted text above, that you wrote, Pyrrho, is the only written guideline I found.

The FAQ is the default boilerplate you get with the forum software.

Maybe 25% to 30% is easier to deal with? Nobody needs to do word counts, just keep it to a couple of paragraphs and we should be okay.

The defendants were businesses (news orgs) republishing the photo as part of their business activities. Copiers who reposted on social media (eg retweeted) were not sued.

I am not a lawyer, so that observation may be irrelevant.

I decided earlier today that I would no longer post photos here unless they were my own. One of my reasons was simply that there doesn't seem to be a way to follow the image back to its source -- for instance, whenever I've been interested in where someone else's photo came from, I've had to use google image search to find it on other websites (and I'm not usually sure which one was the origin of the version I've seen here).

For instance, look at this post of mine from yesterday: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=19161&p=632052#p632052 If I wanted to know where the original image was stored, I would naturally think I could find out by right clicking and selecting "open image in new tab". However, when I actually do that, what I see is....

Huh. I see where I got the original image. :befuddled: I am so confused right now. Has it always been this way? Why did I think that hasn't been working for me, ever before, since the beginning?

Hang on, let me try the Funny Image Thread.

All the images, when I "open in new tab", take me to the original now. :|

*sigh* Never mind. I've clearly been insane for a long long time now.

Google did it? You mean I was right, and we couldn't right-click, open-image-in-new-tab before?

Online forums have been embedding images since the dawn of online forums.

I note that Google is still embedding images in their search results.

I am not much concerned about it here.

Cats and dogs living together, etc.

Google still permits the embedding of images and videos in their own social media platform, so "Meh."

We can still embed images and video in Chrome. We just can skip a step and get the image without giving the originating site a hit.
