Linking to individual posts or citing dates of posts?

Post by Matthew Ellard » Mon Jun 08, 2015 6:24 am

I do not fully understand all the changes to the forum's format.

Am I able to link to individual posts within previous discussions?

If not, what would be the best method way of citing a quote, from that individual post, in a current discussion?

Would it be something like?

Thread title and link to that thread
On 24th March, Oleg the Batty said "quote quote quote"

Have you tried right-clicking and selecting Copy Link Location from the post title?

Like this one: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=25512&start=40#p463483 :-P

Yes. Underneath the title of any post, there is a little box to the left of the "by [author]". Sometimes it's orange and sometimes it's white. Right-click the box and select "copy link location" -- or whatever is equivalent in your browser and then paste that link into your reply.

That's the one that goes haywire in certain threads and redirects either to the top of the page and sometimes even to a different page altogether. Like shown here.

Those two links (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=12865&start=4840#p436575 - taken from the title, and viewtopic.php?p=436575#p436575 - taken from the little icon) are from the same post.

ETA One can also left-click on either the title of a post or the icon and then retrieve the link from the address bar (or do the right-click copy). If one does that, one sees if it's the wanted post right away or if it redirects.

Edit: Added the missing "left-" in left-click. :-P

Thank you both for the help. OK, I now understand what to do.

I right click on the icon to the left of "posted by MrX" and "select open in new tab" and then use that tab's new address, as my link, to the post I am quoting. That makes sense. I have practised it a couple times. Let's see how I go.

There are other new buttons and "stuff" that I also don't understand yet, so I may need to ask some more questions.

Thanks Pyrrho. I'm having those mixed feelings that I used to have when I installed new accounting software. It's the simple, less important features, like adding company logos to invoice letterheads, that have me confused for days.

"Monkey see, Monkey do" is still a very useful method of teaching in an office environment.

If it's any consolation, with the upgrade I had to give up my beloved anti-spam module.
