India's Breeder Reactor

Postby Tom Palven » Tue Aug 22, 2017 8:19 am

India's prototype Fast Breeder Reactor is scheduled to become operational in October:

Breeder reactors are considered to be a possible source of almost unlimited energy without the problems of nuclear waste disposal.

Safety considerations

The fact that PFBR will be cooled by liquid sodium creates additional safety requirements to isolate the coolant from the environment, since sodium explodes if it comes into contact with water and burns when in contact with air. Another hazard associated with the use of sodium as a coolant is the absorption of neutrons to generate the radioactive isotope 24
Na.[9]

There are two independent shutdown systems installed, designed to shut the reactor down effectively within a second. The reactor also has decay heat removal systems consisting of four independent circuits of 8MWt capacity each.[10]

Now you've jinxed it - if there is a meltdown, it will be your fault.

You sound skeptical.

This article says that they are "notoriously unstable and hence difficult to run reliably over long periods." So were my first couple of cars.

Maybe they will do better.

I thought Nukes were recommended as "having advanced" to inherently safe designs that on loss of coolant they would automatically shut down even with power failures of all types.

How big an explosion does 1000's of tons of sulphur make? Does it stink?? ............. Can you tell in India??????
