Did you hear the story about the GMO that almost destroyed the world?

Postby bobbo_the_Pragmatist » Sun Aug 13, 2017 7:44 pm

Once upon a time, way back in 1990, a German company modified the genetics of a bacterium so it could efficiently ferment plant waste, turning the material into ethanol. There was, the story goes, just one problem: the bacteria, Klebsiella planticola, “almost killed the world with booze,” according to an article on Cracked.

I read about this incident years ago. As stated.... here it is again. I've posted before.....I don't see how something like this won't eventually happen. EG: gene editing for the home hobbyist can't be but a few years away: CrispR for the high school savant who wants to turn ecoli into chocolate.

How can this NOT happen????????????????

Hey, if it could, it would only destroy the world as we know it. Who knows what the new (and improved?) version would be like. :-P

Well.... you take each estimated outcome and evaluate it? Here, the case is: No food.......or at least no veggies.

I'm not an expert..........but I think that would have a negative effect.

Well, it turned out to be BS, which they finally got to at the end of the article. There was no proof that this bacterium would destroy all plant life.
What are the facts? Again and again and again-what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what “the stars foretell,” avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable “verdict of history”--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your single clue. Get the facts!

Ah. I see. Lesson not learned, in other words.

No. Typical irrational and unscientific tree hugging greenie bull-shit.

Here in NZ, we had this thrust upon us. In 2001, there was a Royal Commission into genetic engineering. The Green Party brought a Dr Elaine Ingham to testify that this bug would destroy all life on Earth. A few problems arose when her claims were investigated.
1. The scientific paper she quoted did not exist.
2. The bacterium was a deliberately weakened strain which could not survive outside the laboratory.
3. During the experiment the idiots quote, to alarm people, led to wheat plants dying, but all the bacteria died off quite rapidly. In fa t more rapidly than the wheat. The bacterial dose used in that experiment was massively higher than any seen in nature.
4. Everything that the th bacteria does is also done by naturally occurring bacteria, which do NOT kill off other life.

Thanks Lance.
