Matter tending to glom together into lower energy states.

You know... Entropy, and stuff.

If there's anything I've learnt through all my studies, it's that matter tends to be sticky.

So what's a spaceship that can only fly around in one star system?

Technically, interstellar is popularly defined as "between stars". Since everything that isn't inside a star falls under that definition, it is a silly way to define the word -- I mean, Earth is between all the known stars right now.

You could talk about "solar systems" instead of "stars" though, in which case travel between planets within the same solar system might be termed "intrasystem", like from this sci-fi source: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.ph ... jump_drive

"interstellar travel" is a bit less ambiguous.

The meaning of words is often based on silliness, but it matters not. It is the way a word is used that determines it's meaning. The word "interstellar" has been used to mean travel between stellar systems, and so that is its meaning.

Sol is the name of our star. A proper noun.

You can't be calling other star systems "Solar systems".

That's stellar appropriation!

And "Sol" means "star", so a lower case "sol", as in "solar", is perfectly appropriate.

But what's the linguistic derivation of Old Sol, just for our listeners that tuned in late?

The correct term for other places is "stellar systems". The solar system is a stellar system in which the star is called Sol.

Lance Kennedy wrote:The correct term for other places is "stellar systems". The solar system is a stellar system in which the star is called Sol.

A stellar system is also a system of stars that orbit each other.

There might not be a "correct" term. Some people call them solar systems, some people call them extrasolar systems, some people call them planetary systems even where there are no planets, and some people call them star systems or stellar systems even when they are just one star with nothin' orbiting anything in any meaningful way.

I was taught to call them solar systems, and to call our own solar system the Solar System with capital letters. But was that just the preference of a particular professor? I dunno! :pardon:

(Also, stars with planets can be called suns, and then our sun is called the Sun with a capital S).

See, this is why I tend to capitalise words like Sun and Moon and Solar System when I'm talking about the Sun and the Moon and the Solar System, as opposed to other suns and other moons and other solar systems. :P

I have a stellar system for organizing my records!
I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
Spoiler:
1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.

As they say... Guidelines. :P

Solar isn't a proper noun. But you would capitalise the "S" if you called it the Sol system.

Sounds like a groovy funk band name...

If Paul is a movie, no, I haven't seen it (or don't remember it). How is it relevant to this irrelevant and irrational thread of the thread?
