KoRZ, OLD & NYQ

Postby JO 753 » Wed Apr 20, 2016 5:31 pm

Peeps go nuts for their carz. Slowly, but surely, wether they are old classic musl or a brand new econobox, we go crazy, spending an insane amount uv time andor money on them.

Even the prezumably sensibl soccer mom secretary with a Kia Sedona minivan will pamper her 'baby' with weekly cleaning and faithful adherens to the fluid chanjing schedule recomended by the local rip off artist oil chanj shop for better peepl who really car about their carz. A bunch uv time ON TOP uv the 300$ per month loan payment, 100$ for full coveraj insurans, 150$ gas.

Yes, I'm a nut also. You arent a true American if you arent a car nut uv sum kind. Its spred to all other countryz also, but I'm fairly sure we started it. America haz bilt its transportation system on the car, so even if you arent a nut, you may be forsed to own wun anyway.

I started this topic kuz I got hooked on sharing piks & storyz in a Chrysler forum a few weeks ago then got booted for evil sacrilijus spelling. I figure most uv you got car storyz worth riting about and therez so much revolutionary tek development going on with new carz now.

So... wuts your story?

I always treated cars and trucks - as if they were tools - maintain them just enough to not damage them so that they would be available for the next time they are needed. This means almost never washing, unless they were exposed to saltwater or had started to turn green with mold. But even with the mold problem, I found that if I changed my parking habit, I could expose `that` side to the sun, and not need to wash. Wax? Never used it myself.

I do indulge them with a once a year inside cleaning - that matches the mandatory safety inspection and road tax payment schedule, lest the tester fail it for grunge. This also saves a bit on gas, since it will now be lighter too.

A few weeks ago I posted a pik showing car interior lite sockets I'd made in the Machining topic.

Finally finished the housingz they are for and assembeled them. They arent interior, actually, they are the frunt corner marker lites, but the sockets are for the same bulbz.
LiTSoKITS LITL.jpg

Herez an old howzing showing the rotted socket.
OLD KORNR LiT.jpg

Here are the 3 old wunz. I woud hav prefered to restore them, but wanted to uze the same LED 'bulbz' that I got for the interior, wich woudnt fit the amber side uv the howzing. They were pretty badly corroded anyway.

Hmm. Posting piks iz a real chore. The drag & drop duznt work at all and it seemz therez a limit uv 3.

The rear main seal haz been leeking profusely for at least 6 munths. Its a major hassle to fix, requiring the disassembly uv haf the car. Then, stuffing the rope seal in may not go perfectly and it will leak even worse, or it may fail after only a year or so. I hav never dun it myself, but thats wut I'v herd from several soursez. Therez suppozedly an alternativ method, going frum the inside under the enjin, but getting the oil pan off iz also a major hassle and getting the seal in iz way more difficult and prone to failure.

Insted, I'v kum up with a little invention.

Therez a drain slot formed into the sheet metal cover at the bottum uv the bell houzing. Thats where leaks from the tranz main seal and the enjin rear main seal drain out. I reshaped it and plugged it up, then put a tube in it.
LEK 1.jpg

The vinyl tubing goez up to a jar wich haz another tube hooked up to a vacuum port.
LEK 2.jpg

Hopefully, it will suck the oil up into the jar and I will either pour it back in the enjin or if its too dirty, add t to my uzed oil art collection.

The oil recovery system works! I had to swich to a glass jar kuz the vacuum collapsed the plastic wun shown abov, but its alredy sucked about 8 ounsez back up that woud hav been pure waste and pollution. :)

Therez a lesson in skeptisizm to be learned with the revolutionz going on with carz now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWMjR3r-nsI

Just 10 yirz ago if you told me or anybody familiar with hi performans carz that an American production car will hav 707 horsepower rite off the showroom floor, I'd think you were delusional. Back then, that much power wuz only for serious drag raserz, the enjinez woud barely run at idle, with alot uv luck they'd go for a few hundred milez before blowing sumthing up, and 5mpg woud be great.

Even more unbelievable woud be carz that drive themselvez, are electric and beat that Challenjer to 60 by nearly a second! Any gear hed woud chuckle and patiantly explain to you that you are a gullible idiot and the car salezman wanted to see how deep he coud pile the snow over your hed.

A well informed skeptic woud tear the fantasy to shredz. Thermodynamics, the fiziks uv traction, the cost, everything.

Yet here we are.

I'm bekuming a fan uv Duck Tape. I'v almost never uzed it, even tho its a mainstay in all sorts uv hi activity fieldz, like rasing, camping, handyman emerjensy work, etc. My fave haz alwayz been super glue. Next iz silicone (the vinagery smelling version), then Great Stuff polyurethane foam.

A few weeks ago I happened to find a roll uv Duck tape in my kichen cabinet, so brot it down to the shop. I uzed it the same day to brij the gap between the rusty weel well and the new fender. It stuck to dirty crumbly rusty junk, sumhow finding a grip strong enuf and flexibl enuf to last agenst insecurely attached parts, air pressure from driving, rain, cold & hot.

Now today, wen I installed the new weel wel, it came to the rescue for holding nuts in plase inside the fender where they woud be inaksessable. This iz normally dun with ej clip nuts, but I didnt hav any. Super glue woud hav only held at the tiny points where the nuts touched the fender inner flanj and its painted with cold galvanize, wich duznt stick very strongly. Insted, I just taped them on and it worked.

Nearly dun LEDifying the interior uv my car.

Did the gluv compartment yesterday.
IMG_3664 copy.jpg

Over the weekend I completely rebilt & modified the window swichez to work better and added a hi beam swich to the module.
IMG_3661 copy.jpg

Normally for this model car, its a foot swich. Not a good idea for me, kuz I drive with both feet, so woud haf to take my foot off the brake to turn off the hi beemz wen approaching carz in the oncoming lane or clozing on a car in my lane. I'd also move my rite foot to the brake, so you can see how this can bekum tedious very quickly.

I uzed an ordinary house lite swich and modified it to aksept the rocker button from an extra swich from my car. Then I wired LEDz into the panel that show wite wen the hedlites are on and blue wen the hi beemz are on.

Do they still make cars with a floor hi-beam switch? My guess is not... but I have driven that type. My `60 Corvair had one. Paid $50 for it in `69.

Got a little suprize on my way to see X Men Apocolypse yesterday. It started raining so I turned on the wiperz. The low speed wuz faster than I've ever seen them run & the faster swich settingz were even faster! Then they woudnt turn off!

It wuz handy to hav the big hole from the failed dijital fuel gaje rite next to the swich to hav the plug dangling thru it to hot wire it to get the wiperz off to the side.

Fixed the wiperz. I didnt no wut wuz rong, so I took the unit out and replased the wiring. The orijinal wiring on theze units iz the worst I'v ever seen on a production devise uv any kind. They bring the magnet wire outside the motor casing and pigtail it to the gir box & car wiring!!! They uze sum sorta fiber tubing to insulate the wirez passing thru the metal case, and its not very durable. Its really a miracle that it lasted az long az it did.

More use for the duck tape, Red?

Are you keeping it on the parts you fixed with it? Asking, cos in my world, the super adhesive power of duck tape doesn't last too long... but maybe you found an ancient prototype of the weak modern one I have. :-P

Wierd electric wierdness.

I wanted tio replase the old fashioned voltaj limiter in the dashboard with a modern electronic DC-DC buck converter. I ordered an ajustabl wun with a readout on it. Only 8 buks! The old fashioned limiter iz a very inefficient devise. It works by heating up a wire to cauze a bimetal strip to open the srkit. it coolz down and the srkit clozez agen. This on/off sikle gets evened out by a capasitor and the gaje needlez also move slowly to mask the variation.

The only thing being operated by it in my car iz the gas gaje sins it duznt hav oil pressure, enjin temp meterz, just warning lites.

My plan wuz to uze the adjuster along with a rezistor or potentiometer to fine tune the gas gaje to show a reazonable approximation, unlike now, where its on the E line wen therez still about 1/4 tank left (6 gallonz).

BUT! The limiter iz missing!!!! Not there! Empty socket! Yet the gaje iz still getting 5 volts from sumwhere!

Thot I found it today in an odd locaion, even had the rite colored wirez going to it, unplugged it & no! The gaje still works!?!?!?!

Found my wierdest car story that I posted here in 2005. Worth a reprint.

had a very weird experience last summer. ( go get some chips & a drink )

I was driving home when I heard a metalic squeeking from under the car. ( 72 New Yorker ). The frequency & rythme indicated a U joint in need of grease. The drive is 50 miles, and I had to go back to that customer the next day, so I had to tend to it when I got home.

I also have a 69 Imperial, which had a patched up radiator at the time, so I grabbed both sets of keys with the idea of starting the Imp & letting it idle while I greased the joints on the NY.

Heres where it gets weird.

I put both sets of keys ( duplicates of everything except the car keys, so a pile totaling 16 keys and 2 split double rings ) on the surface plate in my basement while I changed into my working slops. This takes maybe 10 seconds. I grab the pile of keys and instantly feel that they arent all there. I blink bewilderedly at the single set in my hand and the smooth emty granite surface a few times.

I went all the way back upstairs on the outside chance that I hadnt actually taken both sets. Not there. I scan the entire path on the outside chance that I dropped them and somehow didnt hear it. Nope.
I check a wider area along the entire path. Starting to question my sanity, I look in every place where I may have put them when I got home 20 minutes before. I look in the pockets of the pants I was wearing. I spent about ten minutes searching. No freakin keys, man!

So I figure I can jack up the car without the keys and start the Imp. I'll search for the keys after I finish the lube & get some dinner.

I get under the car & discover that the U joints have no grease fittings ! This means they are the original stock parts. 32 years and 170,000 miles old. Bummer. Too late to get new ones today. I drop the car and go for a ride around the naborhood in the Imperial to get it good and hot. The epoxy patch seems to be holding, but I'm still figuring on driving the New Yorker because its much quieter and gets better mileage.

After eating dinner & watching some TV, I spend an hour looking for the keys. I even dig a bunch of junk out from the side and under the basement stairs. All this searching is crazy, because I would have had to halucinate the keys being in my hand. But it would have been more believable than them disappearing. Still no keys.

So I had to drive the Imperial the next day. The radiator blew 20 seconds after I parked. I had to rent a car to get home and the fix was 600$.
(I shortened this part of the story even tho other odd things happened )

I spent another hour or 2 searching for the keys that weekend. No keys, but I did find a repair reciept from 1983 for brakes on my dads 78 Omni. In excellent condition. On the basement floor. Which has flooded dozens of times since I moved in here 12 years ago.

The next week, I got the new U joints. The old ones were FRIED. The outer housing on 3 of the bearings were missing chunks! There is no chance that they would have survived another 80 mph run down to Chicago. It could have been very violent.

For a few months after that, I was hoping the keys would show up in some odd place. I occasionally did a little search now and then.
I have spares for that car, so at least I didnt have to change the locks.

I am sure that the keys disappeared. I cant prove it, of course. All I know is that I had them and then they were gone in less than 10 seconds. I live with 5 cats and 0 people. Its barely possible that 1 of the cats took an uncharacteristic and temporary interest in keys and somehow picked them up in the quiet basement 7 feet away without me seeing or hearing it. And then hid them very well.

Or maybe a crippled me from the future uses a time machine to move them to 1984 ( or some few years later ) to my parents house in Chicago & has to move something back here to preserve the balance.

Or maybe I have a guardian angel. Or or or or.....

Maybe I'll have another look around, based on the cat theory.

Yes I do JO.
I bought a new car and discovered it had no spare tire, no jack and no wrench. The dealer told me that most car manufacturers have now stopped supplying spare tires with their new vehicles. WTF

Cheap bastards. :dwarf:

Yeah, I didn't even know about the gear shift problem in Chryslers. Killing ordinary people with their faulty cars is okay because nobody is going to hear about it unless hundreds die. But killing a Hollywood star is going to bring a lot of attention to the crappy product Chrysler makes.

And BTW I am wondering why isn't Takata management in jail yet? The people they killed and the misery they caused for both consumers and the car companies...The latest news I have (which might not be accurate) is that this criminal company is still making those explosive bags and Toyota, for example, is still selling cars equipped with the faulty bags.

I bought a KIA and thank god KIA is one of the few companies that hasn't been using Takata bags.
