My basic assumption is that we're all going to come across as idiots and hypocrites, and I'm okay with that. 8-)

Did you at least mention my excellent spelling? Mwah ha ha ha haaaaaa....

(I had to look up "hypocrites". Even though I know there's no horse in it anywhere, I was still going to spell it "hippocrites".)

I saw hippo crates outside the Barnum and Bailey Circus years ago. Then I was told crates were a type of snake, so i don't know what I saw.

Acronyms don't follow normal spelling conventions. Sometimes they don't even follow normal acronym conventions: http://calvinandhobbes.wikia.com/wiki/G.R.O.S.S.

You may quote anything I have publicly posted on these public boards. If I don't like it, I will be miffed and it really won't matter because this is the internet anyway. I supposed I could say "publish and be darned" but I'm probably going to be too lazy to darn anything so...yeah.

Thanks very much - off the top of my head, I know you are mentioning dolphins with lasers on their heads in it somewhere

I thought it was with lasers in their heads, but then...

Hey! If I'm quoted by "name" can I go around saying I was cited in a scientific paper?

Or does it only count if it's the name on my driver's license? :pr:

Hi all: delayed update, I submitted and had viva in October, passed with minor corrections (British system, viva =/= completion...). I should have the corrections finished by mid-January, and then I'll make the thesis available to those who'd be interested in reading it. Hope everyone is well!

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased to tell you my thesis is now available here. Apologies for the delay, a combination of life admin my end and university admin at UCL’s end.

I’m also working on a blog post which summarises the thesis, and I’ll post that when I’ve managed to complete it.

The thesis is very much a start point, not an end point – I’ll be working some bits into journal articles, and hopefully carrying the key themes through to future projects. So if you do have any thoughts that I could take up going forward, or more experiences to share which might add to the material in the thesis, I’d be very keen to hear them.

Thanks very much again for all those who feature in it. By the standards of many PhDs, I had a great time collecting the data.

I only read the Abstract. Very scholarly, but to quote the Dude: "Yeah Man, thats like just your opinion." /// always cracks me up.

If I read the whole thing, would there be a "so what" to the discourse or is the whole paper merely descriptive?

Hi omarshucl ...
I read it (sped through it) tonight, and I'll give it more attention after sleeping. It reads well. I suspect you are to be congratulated.
But, in the spirit of your own comments ... "By the standards of many PhDs, I had a great time collecting the data" ... how do you know that? :D

No objection to using anything I've posted (even with my name) so long as my ideas aren't distorted by quoting parts out of context.

I hope your thesis goes well...

Thanks :). So in a very rigorous fashion, anecdata from other PhD students I've met. Some jealousy that while they were digging through massive disorganised archives or trying to get that darn experiment to work, I got to read a lot of interesting / amusing internet conversations. Though of course, talking about the bad bits of data collection is a well established tradition amongst PhD students. It also encouraged me to return to basic coding after a long break which was really good for me actually.

If I read the whole thing, would there be a "so what" to the discourse or is the whole paper merely descriptive?

I suspect most of the 'so what' is more for people in my field, who might want to think more about how emotion and/or the internet might play a role in their work. I do have a bit of broader discussion around how to think about 'post-truth' at the start of the literature review, and also in the conclusion chapter, which is intended to go beyond my field.

379 pages?!?!

All I've seen so far is that we're the nastiest of the bunch you studied. (Well, also that I disagree with you on the purpose of humour.)

What field is it that is inhabited by those who think they are the only one's who look for a point in what they read? Sounds like an overly isolated and self absorbed group to me..........

Hmmmm.....wifey is a phd. She does tend to think her every thought is exclusively hers.....even when I have previously written the thought down in an envelop and produce it to her. (I have envelopes all over the place........she still hasn't caught on......isolated as she is.)

I'll read the last chapter with complete anticipation....
