A ... person ... at Purdue declared we should change it to "herstory". I pointed out that started with "he".

Makes me wonder why the French don't call it 'le sontoire'.

Even when compound words end in -man I still argue that they don't need to be changed to -person to be gender neutral. The word man itself comes from the Old English mann (which in turn comes from the same Proto-Germanic root of *mann), which although it could be used to refer to a male person, simply meant "human being" in general.

When you get hung up on words, instead of what words mean, you've gone: silly. We see it all the time.

Well actually no one gets "hung" up on words as the definition means to be suspended and no one has ever "gone" silly since the definition means to move or leave so...

gone cannot be read in isolation. Its "gone silly" which is idiomatic. It modifies silly giving it movement over time as implicitly saying the subject so described used to be sane/valid but now, it is silly. If we just say making our language genderless is silly, we lose the fact that we did not used to be.

My quick google shows this is discussed, but hasn't hit the dictionaries as yet. Just like him/her/it...on the leading edge of language change.

Mind the gap.

You argue against, but then admit "mann" is not gender neutral even in its root meaning? You should man up about what you mean.

Anyone remember the radio skits re "How to be a Man"? Funny 1-2 minute spots about some guy bragging how well he was doing with the ladies or at his job or life....but he was always fouling up. Some very clever spots. I think I have them on cassettes somewhere.
