Private Information

Postby Pyrrho » Sat Mar 19, 2005 5:50 pm

The Skeptics Society Forum database contains only the information you enter into your user profile, as follows:

Required information
E-mail address

Optional (voluntary, not required) information
ICQ Number
AIM Address
MSN Messenger
Yahoo Messenger

Your IP address is also recorded when you register and when you post messages.

Registration information and other private information, including private messages or email sent from users to the administrators and/or moderators, is used only for The Skeptics Society Forum internal purposes and is not disclosed to any third parties.

Our server is geographically and electronically separate from the servers maintained by The Skeptics Society. No personal, private information held by The Skeptics Society is accessible from this forum. None of the staff here have access to The Skeptics Society servers.

Moderators and Administrators do not have access to users' private messages. The Chief Administrator and the system administrator do have access to the forum database, so, technically, they could have access to private messages stored in the database. Our responsibility is to protect private information, not to exploit it, and we will not abuse our position by attempting to access anyone's private messages.

Administrators do have access to your user profile. Moderators do not have such access. Administrators and Moderators are bound by the confidentiality agreement in the Administrator and Moderator SOP.

We do recommend that you take responsibility for protecting your own personal, private information. Although we strive to keep our forum software security up to date, the unlikely event that unauthorized persons gain administrator access may occur. Do not post personal, private information; remove private messages that contain private information; use passwords that are difficult to guess. Some recommendations can be found at this page, How to Choose a Good Password.

Additional information:

When you delete a post, or when an administrator or moderator deletes a post, it is gone and cannot be retrieved. There are software modifications available that cause deleted posts to be moved to an offline "trash bin" instead of actual deletion. We do not use such modifications.

There are software modifications available that would allow administrators to view private messages belonging to any given user. We do not use such modifications.

Private messages are stored as plain text in the forum database. At present there is no provision for encryption of private messages. We strongly recommend that you avoid storing personal, private information in your private message folders.
For any forum questions or concerns please e-mail or send a PM.

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.
